If you are a farmer, or a group of farmers, what do you gain by allowing your land to become a carbon sink? The federal government has introduced a system to help. The Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) allows farmers and land managers to earn carbon credits by storing carbon or reducing greenhouse gas emissions on the land. These credits can then be sold to people and businesses wishing to offset their emissions.
The CFI also helps the environment by encouraging sustainable farming and providing a source of funding for landscape restoration projects.
Unfortunately, it sounds simpler than it is because as a farmer you can’t simply telephone someone and suddenly take money to plant trees. However, that is the concept. For more on this go here.
